The old colonial plantation high in Lawang's mountains is one of the few tea plantations you can find in East Java. Didn't have a chance to visit an extensive plantation in West Java, take your chances as Wonosari is bueatifully situated.
One day tour to tea plantation Wonosari
Leaving early morning will offer you the best views over the area as everything is still fresh. In about one hour your guide will bring you to the slopes of the volcano Arjuno. At an altitude of about 800-1200 meters above sea level, you might feel a bit chilly, as temperatures are between 19 and 26 °C.
The area was opened by a former Dutch company around 1875 and now comprises an area of about 630 hectares. Up till 1942, the Japanese occupation, tea and quinine were grown. The Japanese planted crops such as cassava. After Indonesia’s independence in 1945, the government took control over the former Dutch plantations.
Visiting Wonosari gives you - besides splendid views - an idea of how tea is grown, picked and processed. The hilly area also has its own factory where the leaves are being processed; grinded, dried, sorted, packed etc. Besides, you will find a swimming pool (cold water!), a small restaurant, a mini market, and a children play ground. If you wish, you can also spend the night at the plantation.
